I’m not saying Kevin Costner makes bad movies, he just hasn’t managed to strike gold since “Robin Hood” and “Dances with Wolves”. I’m not saying every movie on this list is a bad movie, in fact some of them are pretty good, but they just didn’t seem to strike a chord with American moviegoers. Here is the list:
Dragonfly (2002)
Film Budget – $60 million
Domestic Gross – $30,323,400
3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)
Film Budget – $62 million
Domestic Gross – $15,749,959
For Love of the Game (1999)
Film Budget – $80 million
Domestic Gross – $35,188,640
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Film Budget – $80 million
Domestic Gross – $52,880,016
The Postman (1997)
Film Budget – $80 million
Domestic Gross – $17,626,234
Waterworld (1995)
Film Budget – $175 million
Domestic Gross – $88,246,220
Wyatt Earp (1994)
Film Budget – $63 million
Domestic Gross – $25,052,000
Add up, all these budgets add up to $600 million dollars. All of the combined Domestic Grosses add up to $334,933,531. This adds up to a loss of about $335 million domestically over a period of 8 years. This guy is lucky to still be getting work. Figures gathered from Box Office Mojo .

Anyone notice that his math is wrong? If all the budgets = $600,000,000, and he grossed a total of $334,933,531, then he really only lost the studios $265 million. still a huge chunk, but $70 million less.

Notice the “Domestic” part. There’s a few people outside of the US who watch movies too…

Blogger made a typo I guess. Looks like he rounded off the grosses instead of the loss. Or maybe he forgot to add in another movie on the list or something. Either way it’s still alot. Keep in mind it’s only the money lost in theaters though, I’m sure these all made their money back worldwide, not to mention DVDs.

Ok lets actually take a look at this. By only looking at domestic gross you miss the full picture. When the world wide gross is viewed yes there was still a loss in the 8 years in question, but it’s only $54.6 million. The sounds like a lot of money but with a lifetime gross on his major films at over $2.84 BILLION that $54 million is kind of irrelevant.

Also two of those movies have no data for their earnings outside the US

Aside from the fact that Domestic Box Office is not the only money source from a film, three of them were critical success (3000 Miles to Graceland, For the Love of the Game, and The Postman).

Um…. 3000 Miles was a critical as well as financial flop, coming in with a whimpering 21% on MetaCritic and a pathetic 13% fresh on RottenTomatoes, and The Postman was just as poorly received (MC 29, RT 10)
FTLoTG is slightly better (unscored at RT, MC 43), but getting mostly average reviews can hardly be deemed any kind of success.
But even then these figures are skewed. Half of a film’s revenue comes from DVD sales (source: http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/06/12/business/dvd.php). Even if we only count US box office as the basis for that, and we only count the movies since 1999 (choosing that as the arbitrary kick-off date for big DVD sales, since even my generally technophobe parents had a DVD player by 99; very scientific, I know!), we end up with an additional sum of $134,042,015, bringing the US-only total up to $469 million. Still a loss, but we haven’t counted foreign earnings, or the other movies Costner did in this period (1996’s Tin Cup springs to mind, bringing in over $53 mil in the US for a $45 mil budget).
Anyway, I’m ranting now, so I’ll stop.

Lies, damn lies and statistics. Figures can be used to prove anything you want to prove. Given that Kevin Costner is still being chased to star in new movies, he doesn’t seem to have much to worry about.

Who cares, it’s Kevin Costner who is great. I even enjoyed “Wyatt Earp” as it shed a whole new light on it him (Earp) that “Tombstone” overlooked. I’ve enjoyed most every movie he was in. Some really did suck though like ‘Waterworld” as this did not portray Costner at his best. He seems to me to be the most down-to-Earth actor I’ve seen these days.

His best film was Bodyguard, and Dances. Why does he accept not very good looking scripts? I will go to Swing Vote even thought to looks pretty bad. I just look at him and think what he was voted for in People mag as ” the man women would most like to go to bed with.” Those kisses in Bodyguard won me over. That is the only movie I ever bought. He seems so sincere. I just went to the Daytona Nascar race July 5, so I could look at him with his band for 1.5 hours. I love stock car racing, but I went to this race to see him. I was the closest person in the audience. He is not the best looking, not the best built, but has an aura that draws me in to that cute smile. I presume some other woman feel that way besides his beautiful wife. He is just sexy. Barbara

Of all the men in television I find Kevin Coster the most attractive. I have read articles in magazines of interviews and I find him to be so sincere and down to earth, along with being thankful for all of his blessings.I would love to meet him in person just to see his smile and to hear his kind voice. He is a very talented person and as for this fan he is #1 on my list.

Who cares about how good or bad Kevin’s movies are
He is a classic and I love him. I don’t even have to turn the sound up when I see him in a movie. He’s witty, sexy, has a great voice and now that he has a band I’ll just say that puts the icing on the cake. Kevin Costner is the best!!!

Terribly handsome, sexy, sweet, intelligent, sensitive. With all these attributes seen by so many, who needs to be at the top of success and make a fortune with every film? Besides I don’t agree with some film reviews, anyway, opinions are subjective, aren’t they?
I like him more and more as time goes by and I wish I could meet him personally. Pity I live in a different continent
